Black Cherry

1978 Black Cherry Lip Smacker

The dark and luscious Black Cherry Lip Smacker joined the original Lip Smacker line-up sometime in 1978. The sweet and succulent Smacker had quite a fan club of its own during its original release in the late 70's that it's still a mystery why it took so long to stage a comeback. Black Cherry first came out being featured in a special promotion where you got a Biggy (.60 oz.) and mini size (.14 oz.) of the same flavor together for the price of one. I'll bring the mini out of hiding eventually.

Luckily, in 2014 Bonne Bell/Aspire Brands brought it back after decades of hiding in the darkness in the Flashback Favorites Biggy trio, alongside Vanilla Cream Soda and Dr Pepper. Black Cherry was dressed to impress in a very familiar and stunning vintage wrap, paying homage to its original get-up.

The flavor is a luscious and unmistakably juicy black cherry and smells similar to the original. I'd say the original 1978 version smells sweeter while the 2014 versions smells more tart but that could be due to the age of the original.

  1. How does the new black cherry compare to the vintage one?

    1. Different, although the scent is a little faded on the original. The original is quite a bit sweeter smelling, not quite as tart as the new one. Both are very different than original Cherry still.

  2. I have one of these from the 70s. Remember in grade 3 or 4 at recess in the school playground, putting it on and that delicious flavour I wanted to eat it. It still smells the same!! Just the tube has aged.
